A mile off the Mussoorie–Dhanaulti road at Suwakholi, the tarmac narrows, the noise falls away, and there is only deodar, woodsmoke and ridgeline going blue into the distance. We took an old Garhwali house here and put it back together — slowly, badly at first — and now we keep the rooms and a small cafe warm for whoever finds their way up.
Nothing here is quick. Everything is cooked the moment you ask for it. The chai is boiled long enough to go dark. Stay as long as you like — the view is going nowhere.
Eight rooms in two styles, each finished by hand — local pine, warm wool, jute underfoot and a lamp on both sides of the bed.
Hand-hung macramé, a dreamcatcher, string lights along the wall and jute underfoot. No balcony and no view — just a very quiet room to sleep deeply in.
Pine overhead, a balcony that opens straight onto the valley, and a long desk with the kettle at one end. The room to take if you want to watch the light change all day.
So nothing is quick, and nothing has been sitting. Six tables inside, more on the grass when the sun holds. Guests order from their rooms; everyone else finds us at the top of the lane. There's no closing time — if you're hungry at two in the morning, ask.
