The honest case

Suwakholi is not a destination. There is no market, no monument and nothing you would put on a list. Almost everybody who drives between Mussoorie and Dhanaulti passes straight through it.

That is the entire argument for staying here, and if it does not appeal then one of the two towns will suit you better — we have written an even-handed version of that choice, including when to book the others, on Mussoorie, Dhanaulti or the road in between?

The offbeat option everyone drives through

If you have been searching for somewhere quieter than Mussoorie, this stretch of road is the answer most lists miss — because there is nothing on it to photograph. We put it alongside the genuinely quiet places nearby, and named the two that have stopped being quiet, in offbeat places near Mussoorie.

Because it is quiet in a way the towns are not

Dhanaulti is a day trip from Mussoorie and a weekend from Delhi, and on a Saturday it shows. Mussoorie in May is a traffic jam with a view. The stretch of road in between empties out, because there is no reason for anyone to stop on it.

After dark there is no town glow here at all. That is the thing guests remark on most often, and it is the thing you cannot buy in either town at any price.

Because of which side of the ridge it is on

The road runs along a ridge, so every property on it faces one way or the other. We are at around 2,250 metres on the valley side, where the ground falls away and, on a clear morning after rain, the far snow line comes out above the haze.

Because everything is a day trip, and nothing is a commitment

Staying between the two means you visit both rather than being stuck inside either. Surkanda Devi is the clearest example: the Kaddukhal road branches off this stretch, so leaving at dawn is a short drive rather than an hour in the dark from Mussoorie.

What you give up

Said plainly, because it matters more than the rest of this page:

• No market at the door — no chemist, no ATM, no shops within walking distance. Buy what you need in Mussoorie on the way through.
• You need wheels. Buses pass, on their own schedule rather than yours.
• One kitchen, not twenty. Which is why we ask what you eat before you arrive rather than after.
• It is properly dark and properly quiet. The point, and still a surprise to some people.

If that list reads as a problem rather than a feature, book Mussoorie and enjoy it properly. We would rather say so now than have you arrive disappointed.
