Devalsari

Devalsari is the one place on this hillside that we are slightly reluctant to write about, and the reason is the reason it is worth going: there is almost nobody there.

What it is

Old-growth deodar forest with a small temple standing in it, off the tourist route entirely. Not a viewpoint, not a park and not a photo stop — a genuinely old forest that has been left alone, which is a surprisingly rare thing within a couple of hours of Mussoorie.

It also holds some of the best birdwatching in this part of Garhwal. If you are the sort of person who travels with binoculars, this is the entry on the page you want.

Why it survives being recommended

Most “hidden gems” near Mussoorie stopped being hidden the moment they appeared on a list. Devalsari has not, for two unglamorous reasons: it takes real effort to reach, and there is nothing to buy when you get there. Those two facts do more to keep a place quiet than any amount of discretion.

Going, honestly

There is nowhere to eat. Take water and take lunch with you, and treat it as a half-day at minimum rather than something to slot between two other stops. Go on a weekday if you possibly can. And if you are the first person there in the morning, that is the whole point — go early rather than after a slow breakfast.

Where it fits in a trip

Not on day one. Day one is for the drive up and for the things within twenty minutes. Devalsari is the day when you have stopped needing to see something — which, on a two-night trip, usually means the morning of the day you leave, or a third night.
