What winter is actually like

Cold, bright and very quiet. That is the honest summary.

We are at around 2,250 metres, so from December to February the days can be pleasant in direct sun and the temperature drops away sharply the moment it goes behind the ridge. Mornings are cold and unusually clear — winter gives you the sort of visibility the rest of the year does not.

The thing most people do not expect is the silence. The day-trippers stop coming, the road empties, and the hill sounds completely different.

Will there be snow?

Maybe. Genuinely, maybe — and anyone who promises you otherwise in advance is selling you something.

It is a common enough question that we gave it a page of its own: snow near Dhanaulti, which covers what actually happens, when it is most likely and what to do if you have come specifically for it. The short version for planning purposes: treat snow as a bonus, and pick your dates for the cold and the quiet instead. That way the trip is good either way.

Does the road stay open?

Usually, yes. This is a main road between Mussoorie and Dhanaulti rather than a remote track, and it is in regular use all winter.

What does happen is that heavy snow can make the hill sections slow or briefly impassable, and shaded corners can hold ice early in the morning and after dark. None of that is predictable a week ahead. If you are driving up in winter, message us the day before and on the morning you travel — we are on the road and we will tell you what it is doing, including if the answer is “wait a day”.

Driving up in winter

• Travel in daylight. This matters more in winter than at any other time — ice forms on the shaded bends once the sun is off them.
• Do not plan to arrive late. Leave the plains early enough that the hill section happens in the afternoon.
• Take it slowly through the bends. Obvious, routinely ignored.
• If it has been snowing, ask before the final climb. We would rather tell you to stop for a coffee and wait an hour than have you attempt it.

What to pack

• A proper jacket — not a light one. The evenings are the cold part.
• Gloves, a hat, and warm socks. Rooms are warm; standing outside looking at the stars is not.
• Shoes with grip, for frost in the morning.
• Something to read. That is the point of the season.

Why winter is our favourite

Because it is the season the hill belongs to the people who live on it. The views are at their clearest, the cafe is at its best when it is cold outside, and you can walk the ridge road for an hour without meeting anyone.

It is also the cheapest time to come for a longer stay: three nights or more between Sunday and Thursday is 15% less, which in winter is most of the week.
