Where to stay in Dhanaulti

“Where to stay in Dhanaulti” splits into five quite different holidays, and most of the disappointment we hear about comes from people who booked one and wanted another. Here is what each one actually is.

Camps and tents

The most common thing sold around Dhanaulti and towards Kanatal, usually the cheapest, and sociable by design: bonfire, group dinner, music. If that is your trip it is very good value. If you are coming for silence it is precisely the wrong booking, and the photographs will not warn you. Ask how many tents are on the site. Eight and forty are not the same holiday.

Cottages and wooden cabins

The picture most people have in mind. Check what is within fifty metres rather than what the cabin looks like — a beautiful cabin on a busy bend is still on a busy bend. Ask whether food is on site or a drive.

Resorts

Larger, more facilities, more people. If a swimming pool matters to you, this is the category, and you should book it — we do not have one and will not pretend otherwise. Worth knowing that pool weather up here is a narrower window than the photographs imply; it is cold after dark for most of the year.

Budget stays

They exist, they are concentrated in Dhanaulti itself near the main road, and the trade is exactly what you would expect: you are on the road the day-trippers use. Perfectly sensible for one night in transit. Less sensible if the quiet was the point.

Homestays on the ridge road

Small and family-run, scattered along the sixteen kilometres between Landour and Dhanaulti. Fewer rooms, the owners on site, and — the part that actually matters — a position past the point where the day-trip traffic turns round. This is our category, so read the rest as interested rather than neutral.

In Dhanaulti itself, or twenty minutes away?

Stay in Dhanaulti if the eco parks are specifically why you are coming and you want them at your doorstep, or if you are chasing first snow and want the least possible driving once it falls. We say so plainly on Mussoorie, Dhanaulti or the road in between.

Stay on the ridge road instead if you want evenings that are quiet, a valley with no lights in it, and a twenty-minute drive that lets you reach the eco parks at opening rather than at eleven with everybody else. That is us, at Suwakholi — ₹4,000 and ₹5,500 for two, a cafe on the property, and dogs free.

Booking, whichever you pick

Weekends and the last week of December go early, and the gap between a Saturday and a Tuesday in what you get for your money is larger up here than in a city. Midweek is quieter and cheaper nearly everywhere on this road — ours is 15% less for three nights or more, Sunday to Thursday.
